Case Study #1

A mining company with four separate operations required a strategy for maintaining diesel engines for cleaner emissions that could be implemented and standardized across the board.

The solution: UGAS emissions measurement systems were put in place at all four sites along with engine diagnostic tools. Training was provided for more than 100 mechanics on proper emissions testing protocols and the use of the UGAS system as well as engine maintenance and performance verification. Training was also provided to operators and mine production trainers on proper engine operation protocols. Technical support staff were trained for maintaining and calibrating the emissions testing equipment and engine diagnostic tools. Each site now has mechanics on all shift crews trained and able to perform testing and verification as well as a site trainer that is able to update training and provide training to new mechanics. The complete program has been integrated with the computerized maintenance management (CMMS) system so that emissions histories and engine specific maintenance histories are stored and accessed by maintenance managers.

Case Study #2

A mine chose to pursue diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology as a possible means of reducing diesel particulate emissions.

An extensive research project and field study over a two year period led to a decision to implement one DPF technology on the LHD fleet at the mine. The initial implementation of four units produced problems with plugging filters and exhaust backpressure concerns. Continued investigation solved the problems with a combination of engine maintenance and engine specification so that to date 80% of the LHD fleet is now operating successfully with installed DPF’s.
